Get High

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

Cities and villages have so many opportunities for the traveler; so much art, history, good food, architecture, natural beauty, and culture. And people. You begin to travel and you discover you're not the only one who wants to experience and enjoy these things. While it has been so fun to be at street level right in the thick of things, it has also been so wonderful to get above the crowds and to take in a place by getting high above it. I recommend this. It's not only a chance to get a break from shoulder to shoulder sidewalk traffic, it's also a chance to get a new perspective and to take in beauty from above.

On my trip to Italy in October 2022, I discovered this country has many towers and duomos for the climbing. If you're willing to climb some stairs, there are some spectacular views waiting for you. When you're planning your days in Florence, Rome, Siena, Pisa, and more, I recommend you give yourselves time to climb and take in the views from the top.

And Cinque Terre, Italy? While the 5 hamlets are quaint and charming from within, the Cinque Terre trail offers breathtaking views of the water and the villages from above. You can hike to all 5 hamlets in about 8 hours, spending your entire day doing this, or you can break it up over multiple days so that you can also enjoy some time in each of the 5 hamlets that make up Cinque Terre.

On your next trip, look for places to see the location from on high. It offers a sense of wonder and a fresh perspective from the heights!
